Calumet Crescent
A regional placemaking identity connecting communities, industry and nature across the Calumet landscape.
✴︎ Togetherness

The Calumet region is a sprawling 900-square-mile landscape stretching from the southeast side of Chicago to the Indiana Dunes and one of the most complex and layered environments in the Great Lakes. It is a place where environmental treasures, industrial heritage, proud urban neighborhoods, small towns, and new suburbs coexist across two states, three counties, and countless communities. Bringing coherence, identity, and emotional resonance to a place of such scale and complexity demanded something beyond planning. It demanded creativity with purpose.
Working closely with landscape architects and planners The Lakota Group, Sparq brought its full creative capabilities to bear on one of the most ambitious regional placemaking initiatives in the Chicago area. The creative work grew organically from the region's already established name. "Calumet Crescent" spoke to both geography and arc, to both history and possibility, an ideal foundation around which Sparq and the team could build a compelling program. From that foundation, Sparq built a comprehensive brand identity system designed to unify the region's many communities, landscapes, and stories under a shared visual and communicative language.
Content development and art direction shaped a narrative voice fully capable of honoring the region's complexity, respecting its industrial legacy while genuinely inviting residents and visitors into its ecological and cultural richness. That voice found physical expression in a family of interpretive installations designed to immerse visitors directly in the landscape: panoramic displays and viewscopes orienting explorers to the region's geography, beacon buoys marking water trails for paddlers and canoeists, outlook towers framing sweeping views across the Crescent's varied terrain, and portage and trailhead signage connecting destinations across the region's network of natural corridors and forest preserves. Together, these elements turned wayfinding into something more interesting than navigation. They turned it into discovery.
Brand promotions carried the identity further outward, building awareness and genuine affinity across the region's broad and diverse constituency. The work earned the Friends of the Chicago River Green Ribbon Award in 2017, recognition that the Calumet Crescent identity and wayfinding concept had succeeded not just as design, but as a real catalyst for connection: between communities, between visitors and nature, and between a storied landscape and the people who call it home.
